Beyond Bindings: The Book as Art

In Discourse, Lydia Bodnar-Balahutrak creates paintings reflecting the historic and continued political turmoil of her ancestral homeland of Ukraine. Bold lines and mixed-media create a tangle of forests and nature obscuring the politically charged text in commemoration of Ukraine’s 25 years of independence.

New York photographer Mindy Veissid seeks truth in movement through Intuitive Moments. “If one looks close enough, energy in the action or energy within is always present and in motion Moments,” she says in her statement. “My intention is to capture the truth of the moment, be it in a movement or an emotion.” New works from Spain and Cuba as well as photographs from Galveston from her published book Photography Squared are on view.

Sculptor Ann Sandburg creates life-sized figures in Children at Play where the written record of current events become the metaphoric skin and bones of her subjects. Haunting and symbolic, her “children” are a literal result of the events, opinions, and ideas, both good and bad, of the world around them.

Galveston Arts Center presents Beyond Bindings: The Book as Art, an exhibition that explores the diverse world of book art. The collective talent of six book artists will showcase the breadth and complexity of this art form. The show will run through January 8, 2017 in the upstairs Pop-Up Gallery.
