Galveston Arts Center presents Binder, a site-specific installation by Galveston artist, Eric Schnell. The exhibit will open Saturday, August 22nd during ArtWalk from 6-9pm at 2501 Market Street with an informative gallery talk from the artist and curator at 6:30pm. The exhibition is curated by Clint Willour and will be on view through October 4th.
In Binder, Schnell combines delicate ink and graphite drawings with bamboo, clay, masking tape, and other assorted detritus from his studio and life to create a narrative of attempted psychological transformation. The story unfolds through each room of the GAC, the drawings and sculptural elements creating an immersive experience for the viewer. Binder features many of the same cast of characters that have been reoccurring in Schnell’s work for the past twenty years, including: boats, carbonaceous chondrites, Freud’s case studies, John Keats, Eugene Marais, and insect nymphs.
Eric Schnell has a BFA from University of Houston, and an MFA from Columbia University. He is a Galveston based artist and co-founder of the Galveston Artist Residency. He has created numerous site-specific installations in public spaces, including Artist Space (New York), Exit Art (New York), Momenta Art (New York), Arthouse (Austin), The Blaffer Museum (Houston), The Hammer Museum (Los Angeles) and Devin Borden Gallery (Houston). Schnell has been the recipient of grants from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, and the Joan Mitchell Foundation.
Galveston Arts Center (GAC,) is a nonprofit arts organization, temporarily located on the corner of Market and 25th Street. Eric Schnell’s Binder is the final exhibit at this location before GAC moves back into its original, fully restored historical building at 2127 Strand in October. GAC and the ArtWorks museum store are open Tuesday through Saturday, from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and on Sunday from 12:00 to 5:00 PM. Admission is free at all times.
