In this introductory portrait drawing class, students will explore fundamental techniques in the studio and apply their skills outside drawing portraits in real time. This beginner-friendly course offers a comprehensive approach to portraiture, guiding students through the basics of proportion, shading, and expression. The blend of structured studio instruction and real-world practice ensures a well-rounded learning experience.
All materials and supplies for this class are included with registration.
POLICIES
ENROLLMENT DEADLINE: Sept 13, 2024
Late enrollment may be accepted, however some materials may not be ready at first class.
Missed classes will not be refunded.
Classes are not recorded for virtual students. Live participation is necessary.
In the rare event of cancellation due to unavoidable circumstances, a reasonable effort will be made to schedule a make-up class session on an alternate date, or the class fee (less any classes already held) will be credited to the customer’s account.
Group communications/announcements are conducted by email to the address entered at registration. Individual communications may be handled by phone/text.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Teachers, counsellors, etc. may nominate a student with whom they are professionally acquainted for a partial scholarship if they can attest to the the student’s interest in the subject and financial need. The student’s parent/legal guardian will be notified and given further instructions. You may not nominate your own child, dependent, or other close relation.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS
Derek Anderson grew up in a small, predominantly Scandinavian town in the extreme north of Wisconsin. He is self-taught and well traveled, studying art throughout Europe (Paris, Budapest, Hamburg, Amsterdam). His primary focus is portrait art, but also create stills, murals, album covers, etc.
He is diverse in my artistic talents and use mediums from wood and canvas, to book covers and vehicle radiators. He expresses through oil, acrylic, pastels, charcoal and any other means available.
Catherine Stroud is a local painter, muralist, and musician. Catherine grew up in the Woodlands where she attended The John Cooper School and played the flute (first chair) and was a competitive horseback rider. She graduated cum laude from Vanderbilt University with a major in French and European Studies before moving to France to teach English to children ages 3-12 for several years. In 2009 she moved back to Galveston where she taught art and Spanish at Satori Elementary. She now focuses on visual art and is involved with various educational nonprofits around the island.
